Ask ten truck owners what size light bar they run and you will hear six different answers, because the right size is not about the vehicle's name. It is about the mount. A roof, a bumper opening, a grille, and a roll cage each have a span the bar has to fit, and the bar's length decides how much light you get and where it lands. This guide walks through every common size from 6 to 60 inches, shows where each one mounts, and gives you a three-step way to measure so the bar you order fits the first time.

Quick answer: what size light bar do I need?
  • Full-size truck roof: 50 inch, usually curved to follow the roofline.
  • Mid-size truck: 30 to 40 inch on the roof, or 30 inch at the bumper.
  • Bumper: 20 to 40 inch, depending on the opening.
  • Grille: 10 to 30 inch, sized to the grille opening.
  • UTV / side-by-side roof: 30 to 50 inch, depending on the cage.
  • ATV and compact spots: 6 to 10 inch.

LED light bar size chart

Light bar sizes are named by nominal length. Black Oak's Pro Series 3.0 LED light bars come in 6, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 and 60 inch lengths, in single row, double row and curved double row versions. The chart below draws each one to scale so you can see how much the jump from one size to the next really is.

Every size, drawn to scale. Check the overall length (with end brackets) on the product page before you order.

Size Where it usually goes Good fit for
6" A-pillar, ditch, bumper corners, reverse Side light, tight spaces, ATVs
10" Grille, rear work light, small UTV Compact flood or spot where space is short
20" Bumper, grille, boat bow The all-rounder for most bumpers and bows
30" Bumper, mid-size truck, UTV roof More reach without a full roof install
40" UTV roof, mid-size roof, wide bumpers Long reach on mid-size platforms
50" Full-size truck and Jeep roof The standard roof bar for full-size trucks
60" Chase racks, wide roofs, larger boats Maximum span and output

Find your size by vehicle

Pick your rig. These recommendations come from the sizes Black Oak builds vehicle-specific kits around, so each one links to a kit that already includes the right bar and mounting hardware.

50" curved on the roof

Full-size pickups (F-150, F-250/F-350, Silverado, Sierra, Tundra) carry a 50 inch curved bar along the front edge of the roof. Add a 20 to 30 inch bar at the bumper if you want close-range light under the roof bar's reach.

All kits by truck: F-150, F-250/F-350, Silverado 1500, Sierra 1500, Ram 1500, Tundra.

30 to 40" roof, or 30" bumper

Mid-size trucks have a narrower roof, so the roof bar steps down. Tacoma owners choose between a 40 inch curved roof bar and a 30 inch double row; a 50 inch curved kit is also built for 2005-2015 Tacomas and 4Runners.

All kits by truck: Tacoma, 4Runner, Colorado, Canyon.

50" at the windshield

Jeeps and the Bronco mount the bar at the top of the windshield frame, and 50 inches spans it. A straight bar fits the flat Jeep frame line.

All kits: Jeep JL, Jeep JK, Jeep TJ, Bronco.

30 to 50" on the cage

Side-by-side roll cages vary more than truck roofs, so the size follows the machine. Sport machines usually run 30 to 40 inches; wider utility machines take a 50.

All kits by machine: RZR, Maverick, General, YXZ, Defender and Ranger.

6 to 10" on the bars or rack

ATVs have small, busy front ends. A 6 inch or 10 inch bar mounts on the front rack or handlebar area without blocking the stock lights or adding much weight up front. See the ATV light bar lineup.

20 to 50" at the bow or T-top

On a boat the bar size follows the mounting surface and the hull length. Bow kits come in 20, 30 and 50 inch versions, and complete lighting kits are matched to boat length.

Where each size mounts

Most builds use two or three mount points that work together: a long bar up high for distance, a shorter bar low for the ground in front of you, and pods on the sides for turns and trail edges.

Roof: 50 inch on full-size trucks

The roof is the highest point on the truck, so a roof bar throws light the farthest and over the hood. A curved bar follows the roofline, sits tighter, and reduces the gap that catches wind. On mid-size trucks the same job falls to a 30 or 40 inch bar.

Bumper: 20 to 40 inch

A bumper bar lights the ground directly ahead, the area a roof bar can overshoot. Measure the opening or the top surface of your bumper; most factory and aftermarket bumpers land between 20 and 40 inches.

Grille: 10 to 30 inch

Grille bars are sized to the opening. They are usually an either-or with a bumper bar, since both light the same zone.

Ditch and A-pillar: pods or 6 inch

Pods at the base of the windshield light the sides of the road and trail, the area a forward bar misses on turns. They run in pairs. Shop LED pod lights, or see the pod lights vs light bars guide.

Size follows the mount, not the vehicle's name. Measure the surface first and the right bar is usually obvious.

How to measure for a light bar

Three steps to measure for an LED light bar: measure the mounting span, compare overall length with brackets, and match a curved or straight bar to the surface
  1. Measure the span. Tape the surface where the bar will sit, edge to edge, between the points your brackets will bolt to.
  2. Compare overall length, not the size in the name. A 50 inch bar is 50 inches nominal; with end brackets it runs longer. The overall length is on each product page's spec sheet.
  3. Match the shape. A curved bar follows a curved roof or bumper. A straight bar suits flat bumpers, racks, grilles and roll cages.

Not sure where you will mount it? The LED light bar mounting locations guide covers the pros and cons of each spot.

Single row, double row and curved

Length is only half of the size decision. The other half is how many rows of LEDs the bar carries.

Bar chart of Black Oak Pro Series 3.0 LED light bar rated wattage by size, single row versus double row, from 6 inch to 60 inch

Rated wattage roughly doubles from single row to double row at the same length.

Single row bars are slimmer and lower profile, a good fit where clearance or looks matter, such as a grille or a low bumper opening. Double row bars carry two rows of LEDs in the same length, so a 30 inch double row is rated for twice the wattage of a 30 inch single row. Curved double row bars put that output into a shape that follows a roofline. If you are deciding between a longer single row and a shorter double row for the same spot, the chart shows they can land close on rated power, so let the mount decide.

Beam pattern matters as much as size: spot for distance, flood for width, combo for both. The combo beam guide explains the difference.

Light bar size FAQ

What size light bar fits an F-150 roof?

A 50 inch curved bar. Black Oak builds 50 inch curved roof kits for the 2018-2023 F-150 and the 2015-2022 F-150 Raptor. Every F-150 kit is in the F-150 LED light bars collection.

What size light bar fits a Jeep Wrangler?

A 50 inch bar at the top of the windshield frame on the JK and JL. Black Oak makes 50 inch kits for the 1997-2006 TJ, 2007-2017 JK and 2018-2024 JL, plus a JK 50" single row kit. Browse all Jeep JK light bar kits or Jeep JL light bar kits.

What size light bar fits a Can-Am Defender?

The Defender's cage takes a 50 inch double row bar. The 2016-2025 Defender kit includes the bar and mounts. See all Can-Am Defender light bar kits.

Is a bigger light bar always better?

No. A bar too long for its mount overhangs, catches branches and wind, and can block sensors or the hood line. Pick the largest bar that fits the mount cleanly, then choose single or double row for the output you need.

What size light bar for a boat?

Most center consoles run a 20 to 30 inch bar at the bow or T-top, with larger hulls going to 50 inches. Boat-length kits match bar sizes to hulls from 16 feet to 37 feet and up.

Do I need a curved or straight light bar?

Curved for curved surfaces such as truck roofs and many bumpers; straight for flat bumpers, grilles, racks, Jeep windshield frames and most roll cages.

Not every build needs a barSome mounts are better served by a compact light. See LED pod lights for ditch, A-pillar and bumper corner mounts, and the R-Series round LED lights for a classic round look on bumpers and racks.
